GIE EXPO 2017| Loving the new Ferris Z3X and Gatling gun on a mower

Benefits of Pine Straw in your landscaping: It supplies the ideal level of level of acidity for your plants to soak up maximum soil nutrients It doesn't float and get rid of and breaks down more slowly, so it doesn't have to be reapplied as frequently as other mulches It is easier to manage and lighter per cubic foot than other mulches: one large bale can cover as much area as 30 cubic feet of a lot of mulches the cost per square foot is competitive with other mulches It breathes better, doesn't compact, and enables better water infiltration It is simple to apply: simply unroll the bales and scatter by hand It does not attract termites It adds natural product and nutrients to soil and reduces weeds The consistent color and fine texture of pine straw highlights the color, contrast, and texture of your landscape You can utilize it for disintegration control where lawn won't grow to hold soil, even on hillsides and courses

Frequently Asked Questions

How Do I Amend The Ph Level Of Soil To Grow Grass?
I Have A Home That Has A Lot Of Pine Trees Around It. My Lawn Is Very Thin On The Front And Side Where The Pines Are, And Doing Much Better On The Side That Has More Desiguous Trees. The Soils Are Very Sandy, But Have About 6 Inches Of Topsoil That I Brought In After The Home Was Built. I Have An Irrigation System Also. The Perenials And Shrubs Around The Home Are Weak As Well. Can I Counter The Accidity Of The Soils From The Pine Trees With Fertilizer Or Something? What Kind? Can It Be Added To The Plants And Shrubs As Well?

Good evening TBT.FSU91,

I hope you had a great day. Your question has many many ifs??

First of all, your lawn may not need any fertilizer. When your soil is too acidity this condition stops your grass, plants, and trees from absorbing/taking in nutrients. I have included my favorite website which explains. Therefore adding more nutrients may not be the answer to your problem.

Secondly, how do you know your soil’s pH? Have you tested your soil? Slightly acidic soil will not harm most plants or grass unless it is below 6.5. You should head for Home Depot or any good gardening center and purchase a pH Soil Testing Meter. The Meters are easy to use and last for years. Make sure you purchase the combination meter which also test for the nutrients in your soil.

Thirdly, if you find your soil is too acidic, your soil will have to be treated with “lime”. I would stay away from sulfur products because of burning. The RIGHT and BEST way to apply lime is by using a “Lawn Aerator”. You can rent or purchase. A power or manual depends on the size of your lawn. Manual is much cheaper.

MOST IMPORTANT: This could be your main problem.

Pine needles, especially when they are green, contain a chemical called “terpenes” which stops many seeds from germinating and interferes with new growth. Notice, if the woods around your house has a lot of pine trees with pine needles on the ground, than there should be very few plants growing under the trees. This is because of the chemical terpenes in the green pine needles.

Pine needles have very little nutrimental value, but they make great compost/mulch. In fact, people pay for bags of dry pine needles. The problem is they decompose very slowly. I mix my pine needles with chicken manure. Place the mixture in a compost pile or bags. The heat from the chicken manure helps decompose the pine needles. Chicken manure is very high in nitrogen and other trace nutrients. After four (4) months, you will have a great/the best fertilizer for almost any vegetable, tree, plant, and especially your lawn.

You and your family have a beautiful day. Peace, from Los Angeles.

Help From The Plant People?
I Planted Some Cypress Tree Seeds In A Big Pot A Year Ago To Bonsai. They'Re Doing Great Right Now And I Decided To Replace The Pine Straw From Winter With Some Mulch (Just Leaves Decomposed Leaves From Mowing). Well I Went To See How They Were Doing Today And I Saw A Good Bit Of Ants. I'M Positive They Came Form My Mulch. Anyway, I'D Prefer To Get Them Out Even If They Don'T Harm My Trees. So, Is There A Home Remedy Or Cheap Insecticide I Can Use That Won'T Harm My Year Old Cypress Trees In Any Way?

Sprinkle a liberal amount of hot pepper flakes on or near the trees where the ants are. They will avoid these and move on. And hot pepper flakes don't cause any plant harm.

What Is Good Bedding For Guinea Pigs? And Where Can I Buy Them? :)?
I Have A New Cage (An Even Bigger Cage Than What They Have) And I'M Having Trouble For Their Bedding.. Any Suggestions???

Aspen wood shavings, Carefresh, fleece (layer two towels underneath it; you can find fleece at fabric/craft stores), Yesterday's News, and pelleted paper beddings are all good options.

Never use cedar, pine, cat litter, sawdust, or straw. You can use hay, but hay molds when wet (pee) so that is something to consider. Cedar can cause respiratory problems. Pine is OK as long as it is kiln-dried. If it isn't, then it's not safe. Too many aromatic oils and dusts. Cat litter is a bad choice, especially the clumping kind. Sawdust clogs the nose and gets into eyes and ears, also causes the skin to dry out and become itchy. Straw is way to pokey and can injure your guinea pig's eyes/genitals.

Better Mulch??
Which Do You Think Is A Bettter Mulch For Weed Control, Pine Straw Or Cypress Mulch? I Know They Make The Weed Control Mats, And I Have Them Down, But They Were Placed 2Yrs Ago. Now I Have Weeds, And I Want Them To Stay Gone Longer Than A Few Weeks. I Have Other Flowers, Shrubs And Monkey Grass So I Can'T Spray A Weed Killer. What Do U Suggest?

I have found, it's not so much what mulch, but how much mulch! Weed blockers break down over time, mulch laid over it decomposes and, if you do not continue to keep a heavy layer of your preferred mulch on top, weed seeds will germinate. Whatever you use, just use a lot of it to block out the sun. Try to use something that is from a sustainable source, pine bark or pine straw. I have read that cypress mulch use is starting to affect the cypress tree population, so I stay away from that.

How To Plant Grass Over Surface Roots?
I Have Many Trees In My Yard With Lots Of Surface Roots. Is There A Way To Cover Them With Loam/Compost To Eventually Plant Grass?

Hi:
I am a landscaper and designer and have run into your problem many times. Many people have trouble growing grass over large surface and above ground service roots of trees. There are a couple of options for you to do.

With both of these options, bring in some good quality top soil. One of the best combination top soil, (if available in your area) is a mixture of black dirt, saw dust, and sand. Bring enough in to raise the area four to eight inches around the entire tree.

You can apply seed, put hay or straw over the area. The hay or straw will help keep the moisture in. Get on a good watering schedule. This option should take care of no grass growing.

The other option is to put down the top soil and rake out and plant some flowers or shrubs. Make it a nice circular bed. There are a lot of shade shrubs and flowers available today. This of course will depend on where your geographic location is. Finish the bed off with some pine straw, decorative stone or mulch.

I will link you to the site map, as this page has everything that is on the website. Browse through and see if you can find any other articles, tips, or techniques that may be useful to you. I will also link you to the gallery of plants section and the vareity of more plant section. There are different plant specimens that you may be able to use.

Good luck to you and if you need more help, feel free to contact me. Have a great day!
