FAQ

How Can I Make Cheap, Attractive, Homemade Snake Substrate For My Ball Python?
The Only Thing I Have On-Hand All The Time Is Cedar Chips (Used For Chickens) And I Know It'S Very Toxic To All Snakes, So That'S Out Of The Question. I'Ve Heard Of People Using Newspapers And Paper Towels, But Those Are Extremely Unattractive Ha Ha 🙂 What I'M Looking For Is A Way To Make Floor Substrate For My Ball Python, Tage. All Of The Beddings In The Pet Stores Are Usually Way To Expensive (I'M On A Pretty Tight Budget) And Come Is Such Small Packages That It Would Be Expensive To Buy As Much As I Need. Tage Is In A Home-Made Cage, The Floor Space Is Somewhere Between 8-12 Sq Ft. If Anybody Has Any Suggestions, Or A Way To Make Some Kind Of Natural Mixture That Would Hold Humidity And Be Ok For My Snake, Let Me Know! I Live In The High Desert, And We Have A Lot Of Sandy Dirt, Leaves, Pine Needles, And Grass.

Home & garden stores a great places. Cypress(no die) mulch works great. You can get fairly large bags at Lowe's for about $2-$4, comparative bags are about $25 at pet stores. You can some times get coconut fiber there, and cheaper than pet stores as well.

I haven't used this but some thing you can try, it supposedly hold humidity well.
Anthony Caponetto's Mixture.
This mixture roughly 50% coconut fiber, 40% sphagnum peat and 10% play sand. The sphagnum peat and play sand are extremely cheap and can be found at any local home & garden store.

What Are Some Good Flowers To Plant That Need A Lot Of Water And Sunlight?
I Want To Plant A Flower Garden In The Front Of My House. My Problem Is That The Spot That I Want To Garden Gets A Lot Of Rain Because Of The Run-Off From The Roof. This Is The Only Spot That I Can Put A Flower Bed For The Front Of My House. Any Ideas On Some Flowers That Are Easy To Grow?

I have the same situation. I dont have gutters and I get a lot of run off. What I do is notice the line where the water hits the ground and I plant flowers a good foot in front of that water line. Under the waterline I pile mulch as deep as I can make it. I use shredded leaves that I rake up from the yard. I use pine needles and I use sticks. This mulch soaks up the water but keeps the water from battering the plants. The plants that are in front of this mulch benefit from having the ground under the mulch be nice and wet but diverting all the direct hits from the roof. You can plant just about anything if you have a lot of sun. What I have put in this spot is Epimedium which has great foliage, spreads out and can get hit occasionally with hard rain and have no problem. I also have Angels Trumpets and Missouri Primrose.

Thanks 🙂

Everything looks great. However, please keep in mind that there's a chance your hamster could decide to chew on the plastic things you have in there. I would recommend you get a wooden house as well.

I, personally, think the Super Pet Sit n Living Room would be a waste of money. The bedding is a good choice. Stay away from pine and cedar shavings/chips. The aromatic oils in those woods can cause respiratory problems. Aspen is the safest wood you can get for small animals. Two water bottles aren't necessary. One will do just fine. Do you plan on putting the playground in the tank? I would recommend having it for play time. Be sure the bowl is in a spot where it won't fall on your hamster. I would recommend Harry/Hazel hamster food by Supreme if you can get it. Supreme is a pretty good company, and their animal foods are pretty good.

The tank topper is wonderful. My gerbils have the second one you posted, and I'm really happy with it. They are too.

Bumblefoot is not necessarily caused by wire floors. They can be caused by unclean environments and could be genetic.

Although it's not necessarily the wire, I do recommend putting straw mats down. My gerbils little feet fall through the wire when they walk on it, so I place a straw mat to give them a place to sit on a solid surface. I've noticed they go up to the topper more often when they have somewhere to sit without falling.

I would recommend a Syrian hamster over a dwarf. It sounds like you're a first-time hamster owner and a beginner. Syrians are better suited for first time owners. They're larger, which makes them easier to handle. They also tend to be easier to tame than dwarfs, and better for holding and playing with. Dwarfs tend to be more skittish, and more for watching. They'd, generally, rather run around than be handled for a long time. They're also quick little buggers, which makes it harder for beginners to deal with.

Dwarf hamsters are social, and are usually kept in pairs. Since you can only get one hamster, and you're a new hamster owner, I highly recommend a Syrian Hamster. Keep in mind that in pet stores, Syrians are also called Black Bears, Teddy Bears, Panda Bears, Honey Bears, Goldens, Dalmations, etc. They're all pretty much the same, though.

Congrats on the new pet 🙂

EDIT: Hamsters tend to make their own nests. Just provide a wooden house, or a cardboard box for them to hide in, and you won't really need a "bed".

Southern Pine Bugs (Aka Giant F*N Roaches) In My Septic Lines?
I'M From The North, And Dirty Apartments Have Little Cock Roaches, But Not Houses. I Moved To The South (Fayetteville Nc) And They Have These Things Called &Quot;Pine Bugs&Quot; That I Saw When I Moved Here And Had No Idea Wtf They Were. Turns Out The Are Like American Cock Roaches On Steroids, And Called Pine Bugs Because They Nest In Pine Straw Which Is Everywhere. We Have Professionals Spray The Outside Of Our House To Keep Them Out Because Obviously I'M Disgusted By Them. We Moved Into A New House About 9 Months Ago And These Stupid Creatures Are Coming Up Through My Drains. Bathtubs, Sinks, Dishwasher Drain.... I'Ve Tried Spraying With Normal Spray, But It Doesn'T Seem To Be Working. Fortunately They'Re Not Invading My House, But When I Go To Take A Shower And See A 2&Quot; Long Roach Run Back Down The Drain Obviously I Freak. We Are On City Water, But A Septic System So My Assumption Would Be These Things Are Living In Our Septic Tank/Pipes Since These Unholy Creatures Can Live Underwater For Days And Are Pretty Much Apocalypse Proof! How The Hell Can I Get Them Out Of My Pipes????

Have your septic system inspected, they are probably entering through a gap in the tank or similar area. For routine maintenance and to reduce the frequency of periodic pump-outs flush a square of brewer's yeast down the toilet once a month.

Palmetto bugs are a fact of life, I lived in the piney woods area of east Texas for a few years and despite how clean you keep your house you will still have them. Google for a product called Diatomaceous Earth, and spread this in inconspicuous places around the inside of your home. It's non-toxic for humans and pets, lasts forever and little critters can't survive in it. Chemical insecticides do little or nothing to defeat palmetto bugs, as you said they are hearty enough to survive a nuclear holocaust. Diatomaceous earth stops them in their tracks, under a microscope the diatomes are like millions of little razor blades and when the roaches try to pass through it their legs become shredded.

Good luck. You have to stay vigilant in your battle against the palmettos, as long as you live there they will always be around.
