WDG Landscaping Ideas for Ornamental Grasses

Benefits of Pine Straw in your landscape: It provides the perfect level of acidity for your plants to absorb maximum soil nutrients It doesn't drift and wash away and breaks down more slowly, so it doesn't need to be reapplied as regularly as other mulches It is simpler to deal with and lighter per cubic foot than other mulches: one large bale can cover as much area as 30 cubic feet of a lot of mulches the cost per square foot is competitive with other mulches It breathes much better, doesn't compact, and permits much better water seepage It is simple to use: just unroll the bales and scatter by hand It does not attract termites It adds natural material and nutrients to soil and decreases weeds The consistent color and great texture of pine straw draws out the color, contrast, and texture of your landscape You can use it for erosion control where yard will not grow to hold soil, even on hillsides and paths

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I Fix My Driveway Myself, And How? Gravel Pot Hole?
The Gravel Has Pretty Much Worn Away In My Driveway And Is A Muddy Pine Straw Covered Mess. While There Is A Thin Layer Of Larger Gravel In Most Places, I'Ve Managed To Carve Out A Decent Sized (Width And Depth) Whole That Is Now Bare. I Don'.T Have Any Heavy Machinery (Tractor, Bobcat, Etc), Is There Any Way To Effectively Fix This With A Shovel And Some Hard Work? How Would I Do It?

You may be able to do it yourself. Found this post by a retired couple who maintains their own gravel driveway - http://www.greatdayimprovements.com/10-g...

Item 6 seems to be what you need -

The proper care and feeding of a pothole –Potholes can be a pretty serious problem. Your best bet is to widen the pothole by taking out the entire section, then fill in the hole with layers of gravel, compacting each as you go.

How Can My Russian Tortiose Hide When Its Too Big? Please Help Me And Franklin!?
A Few Days Ago I Bought This Russian Tortiose. He Was Too Big To Fit Into Any Of The Little Hiding Buildings That Were At The Pet Store. I Always See Him Trying To Tip Over His Plants To Make A Hiding Place But Its Not Working And Its Just Stressing Him Out. Is There Anything I Can Get Him So He Can Dig A Hiding Place. I Was Looking At Pine Straw But Then Later Found Out That That Is Bad For Your Tortiose. Whats A Good Alternative. Thanks!

Hello. Good question – most tortoise owners don’t consider a hiding spot, in the belief that the shell is enough; glad you know better.

Suction-Cup equipped Plants (http://www.thatpetplace.com/pet/prod/214... are very useful for tortoises – you can stick them high up on the terrarium so that they hang down almost to the floor; the tortoise will push its way below them.

This plastic Small Animal Hut (http://www.thatpetplace.com/pet/prod/242... measures 16” x 12” x 8”, and might also be useful.

Please see my Article on Hiding Places for Turtles and Tortoises ( http://blogs.thatpetplace.com/thatreptil... for a few more ideas.

Enjoy!

Wow, one of the more detailed stories I have read on here. It has so much emotion in it, I can picture what is happening while i read it. I wanna read the whole thing!
The last line brought a tear to my eye because I was thinking about all the people that lost loved ones.
It would be so horrible to have to go through that. ='(
I would definitely buy this book =P
Well done!

How To Best Grow Fruit Organically ?
We Bought A House 2 Years Ago, And Recently, I Got A Great Interest In Plants And Gardening. The Previous Owners Had A Little Fruit Garden, With A Few Strawberry Plants, And One Raspberry Bush. Last Summer, We Only Got About 6 Strawberries From The Plants, No Raspberries. How Do I Get A Lot Of Fruit, Without Chemicals ? I Want To Grow Them Organically. There'S Strawberries, Raspberries, And Now, A Black Raspberry Plant. I Would Appreciate Any Tips, Or Even Webpages Greatly. Thanks In Advance!

Grow fruit organically needs your
patient, tolerant and diplomatic skills.

In my opinon, organic growing means pesticides free and using only natural resources.
Such as rain for water, sun for energy, air for humidity, and compost for fertilisers.

Strawberry plants are much easier to cultivate and care.
You can start learning first from strawberry.

Strawberry plants can be planted with most types of soil.
A well drained light soil will be fine. However, their favourite soil is
dark rich sandy loam. The soil had been used one season before
to grow crops will be the best choice; if you are planning to plant
them in a open ground raised bed garden.

They often request for plenty of sunlight and moist.
When the strawberry plants are setting at the North,
should always be mulched to prevent injury caused by
the hard freeze.

Growing large berries in strawberry fields is possible,
if you clip off all the strawberry runners from the parent plant
once they appear. Keep the rows wide between each plant
will have stronger and vigorous growth.

If you have a big field, you can set rows at least 2.5 foot apart.
If you have a small growing space, set rows one foot apart and
set your plants one foot apart in the row. Make a two feet wide
walkway between every three rows of plants for easy access.

Cover the ground around the root with straws, pine needles,
wheat and oats and weigh them with a little of soil, so that
you will have clean and juicy berries when harvesting.

Harvest strawberries when they are red and glossy.
The best time to harvest should be around 10 am.

I hope it helps!

Have Any Of You Ever Payed This Park Scavenger Hunt Game With Your Family? I Need You Help.?
Do You Guys Know A List Of Items I Can Use For This Scavenger Hunt? It Is Where You Let Everyone In Your Family Go Off And Ask People In The Park For Certain Items. Like Say A Ziploc Bag Or Something. It Has To Be Something Hopefully People Will Be Carrying In The Park That Day. Have Any Of You Ever Played It? If So Can You Give Me A List Of Things We Can Ask For? Thanks!

When I was in Royal Rangers (a ministry for boys) they always had a similar scavenger hunt every year at our annual Pow-Wow.

As for a list of items, there were several things listed that could either be found in your own campsite, in other campsites (by asking) or somewhere on the grounds. There was also one special item hidden somewhere on the grounds that was worth bonus points.

Since yours is a family-based game, make the rule that nothing can be taken from the home campsite. Everything must be obtained either by asking other campers or by searching the surrounding wilderness.

Examples: A straw, ketchup packet, one unlit match, a plastic fork, a bread tie, a Ziploc bag, pine cone, leaf, a small round rock (no bigger than 2 inches), and whatever else you can think of from the wild. (Remember to not harm any living thing, plant or animal).

Hope this gives you some ideas.
