Anyone Know, Or Have A Link To Help Out? Thanks

3 is correct, it's the only eastern pine with 5 needles per fasicle/bundle.

For the others, along with the nedles it helps to know something about the bark and in what type of setting it was found (landscape plant? forest/mountains?). Also, cones can give you some clues.

Some links that might be able to help you -
http://dendro.cnre.vt.edu/dendrology/fac... - enter Pinus for the genus and NJ for the state (if found in a natural setting), otherwise, use this map http://www.jardinguide.com/wp-content/up... to find the zone where the plant was found in your state, 6 or 7. Once you get to individual species, there's also a "Looks like" section of links with each.

http://www.arborday.org/trees/whatTree/w... - good for native species only

http://plants.usda.gov/java/profile?symbol=PINUS - another site where you can view species distribution maps to see what pines have been collected in NJ, even if you come up with a name in one of the other sites, you'll get additional photos of the species here (probably).

Pine Needle Mulch For Strawberries?
I Live In The Mountains And We Have Tons Of Pine Trees Around, Can I Just Go To Dead Pine Trees And Take The Needles Or Do I Need To Buy A Different Kind Of Mulch? If So What Would Be Good? And Does Anyone Know If It Is Illegal To Take The Needles?

Pine needle mulch is great for strawberries. If you know who owns the stretch of forest where you want to gather pine needles (called pine straw) go ask them, they probably will not mind. I have a friend who has so much of the stuff he happily brought me a whole load.

Where Are All These Ticks Coming From?
I Live In A Nice Home And Im A Very Clean Person. A Few Days Ago My Brother Found A Tick On Him. He Is Scared Of Ticks. So He Got Freaked Out And He Stared To Cry. His Old Friend He Used To Hang Out With Used To Always Have Ticks. And One Day My Brother Got Like 5 Of Them From Him. But My Brother Has Not Hung Out With Him For Like 2 Weeks And He Hasnt Gotten One For A While Since A Few Days Ago. And They Wont Hang Out Again. But Today I Found A Couple Ticks On Me And I Got A Little Scared. Ive Always Herd Tht They Can Get You Very Sick. Idk Where They Are Coming From. This Is The Very First Time I Have Ever Gotten Them! How Can I Prevent Ticks? Some People Say You Cant Prevent Them And Others Say You Have To Get A Certain Treatment. I Have 4 Dogs And 2 Cats But They All Wear Tick Med. And My Dad Even Checked All The Dogs. What Do I Do? Plz Help! Me And My Brother Feel Like They Are Crawling All Over Us!

I don't know what area of the country you are in but I know here in the south this winter was unseasonably warm. It never really got cold enough, long enough to effect the flea and tick population. I groom dogs for a living and already I am finding ticks on pets! Wooded areas and pine straw areas are a big attraction for them. Your pets should be on Frontline and if you are in a high risk area, Preventic collars as well. Ticks do carry disease but don't panic just keep note of if you feel ill after removing one. You can also contact a local pest control to come treat your yard...your brother didn't get ticks from his friend just maybe the area his friend is in.

Who Knows Where I Can Sell Pine Needles Y'All Call It Pine Straw?

Look up your local agricultural and forestry extension services. Check with your state's forest service, the department(s) of agriculture, and nearby universities for 'extension services, agriforestry'

Here's a typical one from Mississippi:
http://msucares.com/forestry/topics/pine...

That website also has links covering Florida and Louisiana. Texas has a similar service. (I downloaded instructions on how to build a pine straw baling rig from a Texas source.)

And the USDA has a pdf file about this type of 'agriforestry' here:

And here's the D.I.Y baling box how-to from Texas A&M:

Are Pine Needles A Good Mulch For All Garden Flowers?
I Understand Some Plants Like Alkaline Soil And Others Acidic Soil So If I Just Use Pine Needles Which I Can Get By The Ton From The Adjacent Vacant Lot Will It Do For Everything. I Have A Variety Of Many Plants. They Are All Doing Well But I Really Know Nothing About Horticulture. I Do Say A Little Prayer That St. Francis Will Help Me Do It Right So Maybe He Has Directed Me To Someone Here For Advice On Mulch. Thx All

How To Stop Dog From Chewing Up His Bed?
I Rescued A 1-3 Year Old Lab Mixed Dog From A Neglectful Home. The Family That Had Him Gave Him Little To No Attention As He Outgrew Their Young Child (You Know The Type). He Was Eventually Moved To The Opposite Side Of The House From Where They Came And Went Everyday - And Interactions, Even Visual Site Of Him/Them, Became Even Less. This Dog Was Not Provided Shelter From The Weather As A Puppy. He Was Left Chained To A Tree. His Family Would Run In And Out To The Car In Rain, Sleet Or Snow While He Stood Shivering In The Weather. I Finally Got Them To Accept An Igloo Dog House From Me But... They Had Ruined The Chance Of Him Wanting To Go In It Because They Had Stupidly Put A Trashcan On It'S Side For His Shelter (After I Called Animal Control And They Suggested It). They Did Not Secure It So That It Would Not Roll When He Attempted To Get In It!! And Now After 4 Years Of Having Been Rescued, He May Or May Not Get In His House When It Rains. Another Thing I Noticed When I Got Him Was His Digging!! He Currently Has A Hole Dug That Is 5X7 Feet Wide And 1 Feet Deep; Then Various Other Holes Dug As Well. I Have Provided All Types Of Chews And Toys To Occupy Him But He Prefers To Dig. But The Thing Most Disturbing Is His Endless Chewing! Again, Regardless Of The Toys And Chews That I'Ve Provided... He Still Chews. This Includes A Very Nice Coat That I Put On Him When It Was 18 Degrees One Day. He Chewed It Off!! Then It Was Any And Every Type Of Indoor Dog Bedding That I Have Given Him To Sleep On - Even With Toys And Chews Present!!! It'S So Disheartening. Just Last Night I Gave Them Each (I Have 2 Rescued Dogs) A New Stuffed Pillow Bed To Sleep On In The House. I Got Up This Morning And He Has Chewed Up His! It'S Completely Destroyed! And Tonight He Will Chew Up The Other One; Leaving Both Dogs Without Bedding! Any Advice? Should I Consider A Soft Cage Muzzle On Him When I Go To Bed? That Way He Is Ensured A Nice Warm Bed When He Comes In From The Kennel At Night? Please Advise... Thanks!

Do not muzzle this dog you saw the suffering so why add to it, what does he know about material things he lived tied to a tree for years. You have rescued him from cruelty so retrain him and if he chews the bed does it really matter as you can always buy cheap blankets from a charity shop for him to lie on. He digs so what does that tell you you, it tells me he dug to ease the boredom from his life on a chain.
Live your life around the dog it has suffered enough, it doesn't bite you he's not aggressive just work out what's best for him, he is a dog who needs to get over his trauma this can take years. No way would I have allowed this to happen if I had been that horrible persons neighbour.
Life is hard at times but you are making it worse for yourself, he's a dog not a teenager stop fretting over him.
I ended up with 12 dogs (2 were mine) because they couldn't be sent to live with people who cared more about the new rules rather than listen to what the dogs had suffered.
What I wouldn't like my dogs will not suffer it, I would hate a muzzle on my nose and mouth, so would my pets.
p.s Try Crib Dry on the fabrics it's used to stop horses nibbling at the wood in their stables but it can be sprayed anywhere.

Extremely Important! My Guinea Pig'S Cage Has Wire Floor, What Should I Do? Thanks 🙂 ?
Pet Experts Said, Guinea Pigs And Other Pets Should Not Be Kept On Cages With Floors Made Of Wire Mesh Or Wire Bars. Guinea Pig'S Feet Are Extremely Sensitive And Delicate And The Wire Floors Will Just Irritate Their Little Feet, Causing A Foot Disease Known As Pododermatitis, Which Is Sometimes But Inappropriately Called &Quot;Bumblefoot&Quot;. Pododermatitis Is Extremely Dangerous And Painful For Guinea Pigs. Guinea Pigs Should Be Kept On A Cage With Solid Floor. Unfortunately, The Pet Stores In Our Place Only Sell Cages With Wire Floor. At First, I Didn'T Know That Cavies (Guinea Pig) Can'T Be Kept On Wires. But Now I Learned About This, So What Should I Do? I Searched About This On The Internet, And I Found Ways. But They Are Not Really Useful! I Covered The Floor With Newspapers. But Soon The Newspapers &Quot;Melted&Quot; And Got Soggy And Soaky Wet And Got Ripped And Torn. So... No Newspapers! So I Replaced The Newspaper With A Towel. But The Towel Soon Got Extremely Dirty! It Was Covered With Layers Of Guinea Pig Feces (Poo), Urine, Plus Fruit And Veggie Toppings, And Bug Civilization Began! So The Cavies Stepped And Slept On The Dirty Stuff All The Time! There'S A Plastic Floor Pan Just Below The Wire Floor. So I Placed The Floor Pan Above The Wire Floor To See If This Is A Good Idea. But Just Like The Towel, The Floor Pan Got Dirty In Just A Few Seconds Because The Feces Have No Where To Go, They Just &Quot;Hang&Quot; Around In There. I Thought Of Buying Bedding, Which Everyone Suggested Me To Do. But Guinea Pigs Should *Only* Use Either Paper Or Hay As Bedding, And Never Wood Shavings Or Sawdust. But Sadly, The Pet Store Only Sells Wood Shavings And They Never Sell Paper Or Hay. What Should I Do? I Really Care About My Guinea Pigs! I Will Be Very Sad If They'Re Not Healthy! Is There Still Hope? 🙁

Most wire-bottomed cages have a removable mesh grid. If yours hasn't, could you not get your hands on a wire cutter? Your guinea pigs are NOT safe - as you say, they will get Bumblefoot if you do not get rid of this wire mesh.

I hate to say this, but without hay your guinea pigs are going to rack up huge vet bills, and possibly die. An unlimited amount of hay MUST be fed everyday, so they have 24/7 access to it. Hay makes up about 70% of their diet and CANNOT be substituted with anything else.
Hay:
-Keeps their digestive system moving. Hay is long strand and keeps everything moving as it should do.
-Keeps their teeth ground down. My guinea pig got ill and stopped eating hay so his molars overgrew making eating painful and difficult - I ended up paying the vet £75 for his teeth to be clipped under anaesthetic.
-Gives them that extra bit of vitamin C.

Since you are using a pet store cage, I can bet that it is too small as well. Unless it is 60x110cm (7.5sq ft), then you need to upgrade anyway, rather than worry about the wire grid. If it is large enough, and you cannot remove the grid, try lining it with a sheet or coroplast, lino or something like that to make a smooth surface ready for the bedding.
Why not build a C&C cage? These are attractive, fun and easy to build, practical and easily modified and personalized to suit the room. They are MUCH cheaper than the tiny cages you can get from the pet stores. You construct them from: Coroplast (correx in the UK) which is corrugated plastic, often sold in sign shops. You will also need Cubes - wire shelving grids that can be connected and changed with connectors or cable ties.
Do some more C&C research here: http://www.guineapigcages.com/ and http://www.guineatastic.com/cccages.htm and http://www.guineapigcages.com/forum

Where did you get the idea that guinea pigs can ONLY have paper based beddings and hay? Sure, most wood shavings and other beddings are dangerous, but not all.
Does this pet store sell ASPEN wood shavings that have been dust extracted? If they are pine or cedar, or have not been dust-extracted they are no good. Straw is also a no-no.
Here is a list of great beddings. You may have to drive a little further to obtain these beddings since you refuse to buy online (I really don't see the problem as long as the sites have good ratings).

Wood Pellets

If you cannot provide daily fresh hay, quality pellets (NOT mixes) and veggies and a suitable cage and bedding for your guinea pigs, I would really look into re-homing them to someone who can as they'd be much healthier and happier and live much longer lives with someone who can provide those things.

EDIT:
About the Corn Cob bedding, I found some information.
From http://www.guineapigcages.com/bedding.htm

" This bedding is generally not recommended as suitable for guinea pigs.
It molds fairly quickly.
Guinea pigs have been know to eat it. Particles can get stuck on food.
If ingested and the guinea pig drinks water, it swells up and does not break down, creating a potentially serious blockage.
Pieces can get lodged in the genital/anal area causing medical problems. "

How To Make Wood-Chip Mulch?
Every Year My Wife And I Spend A Ton Of Money On That Dark Wood-Chip Mulch. I Would Like To Make My Own. What Are The Ingredients? Do You Shred Newly Cut Wood Or Is Decaying Wood Ok?

Whatever you use make sure its deciduous and not coniferous wood. Conifers (evergreens) do not decompose quickly and make the soil very acidic which can be hard on your garden. Just think of there being NO grass growing under a pine tree where the ground is covered with needles.
For all the work that's involved in getting wood and renting a chipper you're better off buying the mulch.

I Have A New Kitten!!!?
Well I Have A New Kitten And I Want Him To Have The Best Life Lolz Xd And He Is Sooo Cute! He Chews On Its Paw And Stuff Lol But Anyways What Should I Buy Him To Have A Good Life And I Dont Have Alot Of Money So Yea But Like Cheap Toys And Stuff Plezz Thanks Lotsss ***[email protected]@B3***

Congratulations on getting a new kitten!

Well, I am going to list a lot of stuffs here, some you already know but maybe not enough and some you might not know.
New Kitten Checklist:-

Food

(find out what she is eating prior to coming home to you, keep the same food if it is a high quality brand. If you need to change, transition slowly by mixing the old and new food together)

Water

(filtered water would be the best, you can also invest in a water fountain if you like. Petmate and Drinkwell are popular ones)

Food/Water Dish

(Kittens and cat like to eat and drink from shallow bowl. Dog bowls are not suitable because they are deeper and cats do not like to get their whiskers wet or soggy. Stainless steel and ceramic are the best. Avoid double serving dishes - keep a separate dish for food and water)

Grooming Tools

(short haired cats require less grooming than long haired. Invest in good quality clippers, brush, flea comb, wet wipes, and I like to use a chamois cloth to give my kitty's coat a high sheen and glow after grooming. The furminator is also a good tool to help with controlling excessive shedding. Kitten do not need to be bathed unless they get very dirty/messy)

Litter and Litterbox

(She will need at least one litterbox for your kitten. To begin with, choose a smaller one where the sides are lower so she is able to climb in and out easily. Remember, not all cats like a covered litterbox. It is only convenient for the owner.
There are many kinds of litter to choose from and I personally prefer clumping litter made from natural biodegradable ingredients like corn, wheat and pine)

Scratching Post and Play Structures

(This is very important to get for your kitty because you do not want her to learn to scratch your furniture. Scratching is a natural habit and you shouldn't punish er. When you buy a scratching post, make sure it's one that is sturdy and will not tip off easily. All cats love to climb and getting her a nice cat tree of playhouse will allow her to exercise her natural talent without ransacking your house)

Stain and Odor Remover

(Accidents happen so be prepare to clean up after your kitten. You must remove all traces of urine from carpeting because a kitten will urinate on the same spot again if she scent it.)

Carrier

(When you bring your kitten to visit the vet, you will need a carrier. It is important that you choose one that fits the kitten comfortably and she can stand and turn around easily. You can choose hard sided or soft sided carriers and they come is all shapes and design)

Collar and ID Tag

I hope your cat stays indoor. If she is outdoor, a collar and ID Tag is a must. I am not a huge fan of collar for indoor cat because of the possible risk of strangulation and getting stuck in structures. But it is up to you to make that decision. Choose a breakaway collar if you must.

Toys

(Kitten loves to play and make sure you always supervise her playtime. Favorites are jingle bells, mylar balls, feathered toys, dangling toys, lure toys, and I recommend you try Da Bird and Cat Dancer. They go absolutely crazy for them. Some toys you can make at home. Milk Jug Ring is a hit in all cat household, drinking straws, a wad of paper, etc)

Bed

(Just to remind you, you cannot place a kitten on a bed and expect her to sleep there quietly like a newborn baby. Kittens will choose wherever they want to snooze and the place changes all the time. Just make a simple comfortable bedding for her should she choose to sleep in a bed)

This site is very useful in learning more about taking good care of your kitten. Hope you'll visit and get more information from there.

Can A Dogwood Tree Tolerate The South Texas Elements?
If So, When Is The Best Time To Plant? Thanks!

Dogwoods are picky little trees that can be hard to get established when transplanting. They are native to my part of Texas (East) and they are all over the woods, but I have never had any luck getting a bought one to grow in my yard. They say they like acidic soil (same as azaleas), so they should be heavily mulched with pine bark or pine straw (that's acidic). They are understory trees, which means they typically grow under other larger trees to block out some of the hottest sun. The perfect situation is to put them under pine trees--that way they get the acid soil and the shade. If you don't have any larger trees around your planting site, and it gets no shade from the house or other structures, the tree may not tolerate it.

Look around the area....do you see other ones growing, either native or planted? Do you see any for sale at the nurseries? If you have a hard time finding any, or if they don't seem to be thriving, then your answer is probably no.

If you see some, or if you are determined to try it, get a tree from a nursery or retailer that offers a guarantee, and follow all the instructions for planting. It's best to wait until fall when they go dormant, for South Texas that may be well into Dec. You can go ahead and dig the hole now and be conditioning the soil before the ground gets hard after a freeze. If you can't find a tree locally, be sure to check the growing zone of the one you order to make sure it is rated for your area.

If there is a college or university near you with a horticulture dept., you could also consult them, or talk to someone at your county extension office. They usually have tip sheets on everything or can answer questions over the phone or e-mail.

Shady &Quot;Dead Zone&Quot; In Yard And Dogs Just Dig And Get All Muddy.?
Hi, I Have Two Dogs And A Shady Area Where No Grass Or Plants Can Grow. Last Year I Laid Down Wood Mulch In The Area And The Dogs Just Dug Around And Made It Look Worse Than Before. Plus, The Mulch Faded And Clumped And Only Looked Nice For A Few Months. Is There A Type Of Decorative Rock That I Can Put In This &Quot;Dead Zone&Quot; That'S Still Safe For Dogs To Walk On? I Was Considering River Rock Since It Is Normally Not So Jagged, But I Am Unsure. Any Help You Can Provide Is Appreciated. Thank You.

I have to say - you sure took a chance with putting down wood mulch with the dogs! What would happen if they swallow it? Maybe you should try out the rubber kind of mulch. It's totally not toxic in case they do swallow it and it's rubber so it shouldn't get faded or clumped. Plus, I have to add - it lasts way longer than just a few months! Just a thought... maybe it's an idea for you.

How Can I Grow Lilly Of The Valley? Need Some Pointers Please! :)?
Ok, I Have No Green Thumb Whatsoever!!! I Had A Cactus Once And It Died.......But I Love Lilly Of The Valley And Now I Have A Big Yard In Eastern Nc And I'M Just Curios.......Given That I Find The Seeds And Plant Them, Does It Stand A Chance In This Climate Under My Care? When Is The Best Time To Plant? I Have No Idea What To Do. P.S. Eastern Nc Is Very Hot In The Summer, Very Humid, Most Of The Time It Rains, Winters Are Mild And We Also Have Mosquitoes Size Of A Cow!!!! :)))

Hi there. I live in eastern NC Too. You are very right about the hot summers but we haven't had the rain-we are in a drought and mosquitoes are annoying about dark.

Okay heres a short lesson:

First of all pick your spot to plant. It needs to be partial sun to shade. Mine is more on the line of partial shade to shade but they do bloom. Supposedly they bloom better in the partial sun but then again most people don't have our humidity!

If your ground is hard and clumpy you will need to add some compost, peat moss or potting mix.
You will mix this in with what you have and make sure you have a good consistency.

Put your seeds out and cover about the size of the seed. Cover lightly if that makes more sense.
You can add some mulch, pine straw, etc to keep the seeds protected.

When it gets warmer in the spring, you will need to check on them often. Seedings will be coming up soon. If seedling are too close together you can move them. As they grow a bit, add some fertilizer like osmocote around them. Be sure to keep them watered as they get established and more in the summer while we will bet sweating like crazy!

They will multiply slowly by seed. It is much easier to buy lily of the valley pips in places like walmart and just plant them. Pips will grow and spread much more quickly. When you buy say a package I think you will get like 2 or 4 pips. I'd buy a couple bags to get a good start.

Seeds will be hard to find unless you have friends with them. There is website for seed trading that you may enjoy signing up for. It is free and the people are very friendly. Save seeds from your yard or buy a few packs of seeds and start trading. It is addicting and lots of fun. You could possibly find your seeds here.

I will look up and see if I can find a website selling these. If so, I will be back to let you know

Here are seeds:

I Have Chigger Bites? Please Answer!!?
I Dont Know A Lot About Them They Showed Up This Afternoon And I Was In A Place Yesterday And Apparently Got Them Then Just The Bumps Are Showing Today... 1. How Do I Get Rid Of It All Off My Body? 2. I Work Fast Food (Teen) Is It Some Kind Of Harzard To Be Dealing With Food/ Peoples Food While I Have This? Thanks

Okay I live in Texas and have been bit by chiigers numerous times during the summer months. Relax and feel at ease because:

1. Chiggers are just a tiny bug bite you most likely got from walking in high grass or weeds. They are nothing to worry about but can be itchy and painful at times. I would suggest putting alcohol or calamine lotion on them to control the itch. You can also use a clear fingernail polish to coat each one (I have done all these before).

2. Chiggers are not contagious and they cause no harm to you or anyone you may come in contact with. It is okay to serve food and be in that type of environment.

Here is the information I found at http://www.wikipedia.com

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Harvest Mite

Harvest mites (genus Trombicula; also known as red bugs, trombiculid mites, scrub-itch mites, berry bugs or, in their larval stage, as chiggers) are mites in the family Trombiculidae that live in forests and grasslands. In their larval stage they attach to various animals including humans and feed on skin, often causing itching. These relatives of ticks are nearly microscopic measuring 0.4 mm (1/100 of an inch) and have a chrome-orange hue. A common species of harvest mite in Northern America is Trombicula alfreddugesi; in the UK the most prevalent harvest mite is Trombicula autumnalis.

Harvest mite larvae are tiny, irritating, red immatures between the egg and nymph stages, which have not yet become adult mites. They are usually microscopic. The larvae often live in berry patches, tall grass and weeds, woodland edges, pine straw, leaves, and treebark, or in typical habitats of their hosts (especially rodents).

The larval mites feed on the skin cells, but not blood, of animals, including humans. The six-legged parasitic larva feeds on a large variety of creatures including humans, rabbits, toads, box turtles, quail, and even some insects. After crawling onto their host, they inject digestive enzymes into the skin that break down skin cells. They do not actually "bite," but instead form a hole in the skin and chew up tiny parts of the inner skin, thus causing severe irritation and swelling. The severe itching is accompanied by red pimple-like bumps (papules) or hives and skin rash or lesions on a sun-exposed area. For humans, itching usually occurs after the larvae detach from the skin.

After feeding on their hosts, the larvae drop to the ground and become nymphs, then mature into adults which have 8 legs and are harmless to humans. In the post larval stage, they are not parasitic and feed on plant materials. The females lay 3-8 eggs in a litter, usually on a leaf or under the roots of a plant, and die by autumn.

Autumn Activities?
What Autumn/Fall Activities/Games Are There To Do When You Get Bored? It Could Be Anything Fun. Halloween Is Next Month, So If You Know A Halloween Activity, Please Let Me Know. I Remember In Elementary School That Our Teacher Would Print Out Pictures And Activities For Us To Do, When It Was Near The Holidays (Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas). We Would Cut Out Pictures And Put Them Together. For Example, A Christmas Activity We Did Was That We Made An Ornament Cutting Out Paper And Putting It Together. If You Know Anything Like This, You Can Just Let Me Know.

Some of the things my kids liked to do, were gather leaves when the are turning to those beautiful colors and dip them into melted parafin/wax.. Then lay them on wwax paper to dry. It sort of preserves them. We used them for decorations on the tables and doors. We also made pinecone wreaths out of things found on scavenger hunts. No matter where you live you can find something to hot glue to the straw wreath. Pine burrs, sycamore balls, buckeyes, walnuts, hickoty nuts, pecan hulls, etc. These are alot of fun and make awesome memories. Here in Cleveland TN, we have several farms that have Cornfield Mazes and Soy bean Mazes to wander through. Pumpkin Farms with Hayrides are always a hit too!

What To Look For And/Or Ask When Looking At Potential Boarding Facilities?
Hey, I Have Been A Western Rider For Many Years And Am Looking At Potently Buying My First Horse. However, I Need A Place To Keep It, Hence On Boarding. So I Was Wondering, What Are Some Things To Look For In A Potential Facility? What To Ask? What Are Some Good Things In A Facility And What Are Some Bad Things? Thank You.

1. Accommodations....size of stall (12 by 12 is the minimum size I would accept), type of flooring and bedding (rubber mats, dirt, etc., pine shavings versus straw, etc). Is the barn well ventilated, with open air flow to all stalls? You want good ventilation since poorly vented barns are the cause of many equine respiratory ailments. Frequency of stall cleaning and bedding change? Is there a secure tack room with ample space for your trunk/saddles/etc? Is there a wash stall? Hot and cold running water, or only cold?
If pasture boarding, size of shelter and number of horses sharing one shelter. 12 by 12 feet of space per horse is ideal. Is there a place provided for feeding and grooming pasture horses?

2. Feed....type of hay and amount fed.....is it individualized to accommodate the needs of your particular horse? Hard feed offered, and what is the mix and percentages of protein, fat, and starch? Can they accommodate special feeds, supplements, medications, etc. for individual horses? Any added costs for doing that?
Feeding schedule, as in two or three feedings daily.
If pasture boarding, is supplemental hay fed? Where and how much? Can grain be fed or individual supplementation given for added fee?
Is fresh water available 24/7, and kept at drinking temperature through winter?

3. Policies on veterinary service....vaccination requirements, deworming program, policy on emergency vet calls, etc. You want a well managed barn that requires vaccines and deworming of all horses. What is the isolation/vaccination/Coggins testing policy for new horses coming into the barn in order to protect the existing boarders? Are you allowed to bring in your own vet and farrier, or required to use the barn vet/farrier? Are you required to be present for all vet and farrier appointments, or do they provide that service?

4. Turnout....how many hours a day will your horse be turned out? Every day? Separate fee for turnout? Where will he be turned out? (dirt paddock versus grassy pasture, etc) How many horses are turned out together in how big of an area. You want fewer horses in a large pasture if possible. Is there shelter in the turnout area? Are they turned out regardless of weather? Are there different turnout options, such as individual turnout versus group turnout? What is done if horses are fighting excessively in pasture? Depending on how you use your horse, you may be more or less concerned with things like individual turnout.
Are the fences safe and in good repair? Barbed wire is unacceptable fencing for horses. Any metal T posts should be capped. Do they use electric fence?

Will they apply and remove fly masks, blankets, or provide other services like fly spraying or applying sunscreens? What are the added fees for these services?

5. Riding facilities? Outdoor arena size, indoor arena size, any trails to ride on? Are arenas available to boarders at all times? If not, when are they not available? Are there lessons given in the arenas? Is there a trainer available? What is the arena footing and how is it maintained?

6. Trailer parking available? Or, do they offer trailering service? Do they sponsor shows? Will they trailer your horse to shows? Fees?

7. Is there a specific discipline that the barn caters to, such as jumping or dressage? How will you and your horse fit in with the other boarders and the type of barn? Does the atmosphere seem friendly and like what you are looking for? Do the horses being boarded look healthy and well cared for?
Does the boarding cost fit the accommodations? Is board expected to increase anytime soon? When is board due? Grace period and late fees? Barn hours?

Frequently Asked Questions

How Can I Rid My Patio Of Mosquitoes?
I Live On The Ground Floor Of A 3 Story Apartment, And I Am Having A Problem With Mosquitoes. It Has Been Dry, So I Don'T Know Where They Are Coming From. The Problem Is Only On My Back Patio, Which Is A 10 X 12 Foot Concrete Slab Surrounded By Pine Straw. I Live In South Carolina, So It Is Hot And Humid, But The Only Water That I Can Detect Is The Condensation From My Air Conditioning Unit, Which Drips Out Of The Side Of The Building. I Don'T Know What To Do To Stop This. I Can'T Really Grow Anything, Unless It Could Possibly Be Hung From A Hanging Basket From The Patio Above Mine. Is There Any Kind Of Concoction I Could Whip Up And Leave In A Jar That Would Attract Then Kill Them? Or Is There Something That Would Deter Them? Thank You So Much For Your Help!

I have 5 bamboo holders about 4 feet high with special citronella oil burners in them all around my patio, just light the wicks and they keep them critters away, even in a wind they dont blow out! Excellent... i live in London but i am assuming you must be able to purchase them in America......

What Is High-Quality Brand Of Artificial Christmas Tree And Where To Find It?
It'S The Holiday Season Again, And I Need To Find A High-Quality, Artificial Christmas Tree. However, The Ones I'Ve Seen At Discount Stores Like Wal-Mart Don'T Use The Same Type Of &Quot;Pine Needles&Quot; On The Inner Portion Of The Tree, To Make The Tree Cheaper. Unfortunately, They Really Don'T Look As Nice As I Would Like, Especially Since I Plan To Use The Tree For At Least A Decade. I Need A Pre-Lit Tree Between 7-8.5 Ft Tall, At Least 3.5 Ft Wide, With A Metal Base. I Don'T Need Pine Cones Or &Quot;Snow&Quot;. Do You Have An Artificial Tree You Really Like Or Have You Seen Some Really Nice Ones? Where Did You Get It And What Brand And Model Is It? Thank You So Much For Your Help.

Good question, it's really not clear what you are getting when you look! On top of that manufacturers tend to sell the same tree different places with different names - just to make it confusing. So a tree might be GE one place and Santa's best another - and they are made at the same place in China.

I'm looking for a new tree this year and think I'll end up purchasing from Bronners (http://www.bronners.com/categories/christmas-trees-accessories/pre-lit-trees) they have a lot of variety and most list how long the warranty is. I like pre-lit trees but keep in mind that these are guaranteed as long.

I Have Little Landscaping Questions.?
I Have Bermuda Grass With No Weeds , I Want To Invest In A Lawnmower So That I Dont Want To Pay No One To Cut It. What The Best Lawnmower To Buy That Want Burn My Grass And Make Dollar Spots. Also How Often And How To Put Pine Straws Out Around Home???

Any of the cheaper 18'' to 22" push mowers with Briggs engine will do great work. The Honda engines are more expensive and I love them, they do great and last forever. That said, I have several Briggs engines that are 25 years old and still running fine. I have used synthetic oil for 30 years or more in everything I own and change once a season. Small yard, get 18" mower with 3.5 hp or more if it available. Larger mowers must be 5 to 6 hp. To have the perfect lawn the blade sharpness in more important than the mower. Always remove it and use a file to sharpen it.

Bermuda likes to be cut short as opposed to St Augustine or fescues who like to be cut at the highest adjustment. Just make sure you wheel height is right for your lawn if it's bumpy or has sharp contours

Riding Mowers, again, size to your yard and go for plenty Horse Power and a shuttle transmission. It will allow you to have high rpm and go very slow when you need. The bigger Briggs engine are as good as the Honda's and cheaper.

I might add that you should always put the anti-varnish additive in your gas can before filling the mower tank.

P.S. i am 13 my aunt is 22 and i did all that stuff on the list but sky diving. u cant pay me enough to jump out of a plane with a parachute that might not come out when u pull the string. iv also never been scuba diving.

Christmas Tree Questions?
This Is My First Year Buying A Christmas Tree And I Don'T Know Much About It. What Type Of Christmas Tree Is The Best To Get? I Want A Thick Green Lush Tree, With Softer Needles. Well Scented, (But This Comes Last As I Can Use Candles Etc) What Type Of Tree Lasts Longer And When Can I Set One Up So It Will Last Till Christmas? Are There Any Tricks To Keeping It Alive Etc? Thank You!

You need to go and pick a tree yourself, everybody has their favourite type, mine is pine.
Make sure you water the tree, you can use a spray and some stands do hold water. Many people where I live, in the country, put their tree in a bin filled with water over night whilst it's still in the netting, or even for a day or two and they tend to last a long time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Any One Know How To Take Care Of Azaleas?
I Just Bought Some Azaleas And Want To Know How To Care For Them. Are They Perennials Or Are They Annuals? How Big Do They Get? I Am Going To Be Planting Them Soon And Would Like Any Advise To Get The Best Results From My Plants.

I love these plants, so rewarding!

You can find out about the problems that can happen here:
http://www.azaleas.org/index.pl/azdiseas...

and the most brilliant care sheet is here:
http://www.azaleas.org/index.html

One or two additional tips:
Since they love acid so much, I take pine needles and bury them underground in and around the place where they grow, and ensure only acid-loving plants are there.
Growing them under a acid-causing tree like a pine tree is ideal with some light shade.
Some taller varieties like sun, and lots of it, it depoends on the variety.
I also make sure to sprinkle epson salts around it annually, just a bit, to prevent the leaves going yellow for lack of iron.
All through the year I give mine a high-grade foliar feed, and always amaze any visitors, who swear it's only supposed to flower twice a year, mine flower year round, since I protect them in winter with extra mulch (pine needled and I break pine cones up too). I've never had one react to the amount of acidity I give it, for some weird reason.
Mine are all in pots or in my rockery, and they make the most beautiful show when there's a variety of them in different sizes and shades, absolutely beautiful!

How Do I Make Compost...............?
My Compost Will Not Activate And I Can'T Afford The Chemicals. What Do I D To Activate It Naturally. Isn'T There Something You Can Do With Amonia

The key is to have a 50 50 mixture of green or fresh material and brown or dead material. In my neck of the woods I use half pine straw and half grass clippings or kitchen scraps (no animal products!). Keep the pile evenly most, not wet and turn at least once a week or when you add new material.

Does Anyone Know Anything About An Italian Stone Pine? (Pinus Pinea)?
First Off My Grandma Bought One Of These Trees And She Wanted A Little Mmore Info On It, So I (Without Thinking) Told Her I Could Look It Up. \ Thing Is, I Hate Researching. I Live In Southern Alabama, And I Want To Know About How Big It Will Get Over The Next Year(S). Thanks For The Help [:

An Italian Stone Pine can reach a height of 100 feet when mature, It will also develop a somewhat flat to rounded crown during that time. Its not an extremely fast grower but I would situate it a ways away from the house or other buildings on the property. Same for the driveway as it's roots can lift or crack pavement and foundations over time. Also even though the needles are small when they first start to grow out they will reach about 8 inches in length when mature. If your Grandma wants to keep it smaller then try growing it in a large container where it will be easier to prune. They also make very interesting Bonsai Trees in my experience.

Can A Pine Tree Be Topped?
Old Pine Tree Partially Dead At The Top If Topped Will It Grow Back Into Shape

No.

Pines only grow at the tips of each branch and the terminal bud on the top. There are not viable buds back beyond this, so cutting back dooms the branch. Eventually it will die as pines shed their older needles and with none to replace them on that branch......

How much of the top is gone? If it is just the tip, yes the pine will continue upward, taking on a more rounded appearance as the immediate laterals will vie for dominance. If you have lost a foot or more, you now have a flat top........it will grow outward as long as those tips remain alive, but not upward.

Spruces and firs are more forgiving as they has buds a bit back from the tip...not much...but enough that they can overcome a lost terminal and continue upward. Sometimes you need to help them a bit by selecting one and supporting it upright for a season until it resumes the dominant terminal bud position and controls the growth of the other laterals who might vie for being "king."

Hi Everyone. Firstly, Sorry About The Spelling And Grammer, I Can Spell But Too Lazy To Sit And Think As I Got Into A Habbit Of Typing How I Txt Spell. I Love You Unconditionally. If Your Happy Thats What I Want, If Its Me Or Someone Else I Can Take It- Im A Strong Charactor Now.

I think you're making too many assumptions about this girl. She has probably moved on by now. If there's no way for you to contact her or reconnect maybe you should try to move on and see if you can find happiness in other pursuits besides dating. Dating shouldn't take up your entire life and you seem obsessed with this girl. It's not healthy to pine after someone for years. Try to move on for yourself.

FAQ

I Would Like Some Pointers On How To Grow Blueberries.?
I Am Especially Interested In Growing Them To Be Organic.

Pretty easy.

Best production normally happens when at least two varieties are planted in close proximity and as foliages vary from bronze to blue green, the plants can double as a nice hedge or backdrop too!

Bees do just about all the pollination so hives nearby are a good thing.

Top dress when planting with a little compost. They like acidic soil so use fir or pine sawdust or pine straw, needles etc. as a thick mulch (about 1 cubic foot per plant to start). Never use cedar or other slow decomposing species as the natural preservatives in these types of wood will kill plants). Continue to add a little more compost and a new layer of mulch each year in the fall after leaves have fallen or early spring before leaves are out.

Plants require watering as berries develop. A drip type irrigation away from the leaves is best in reducing mildews etc. Note that the berries have a natural "blush" or powdery look which is not a problem (as it is on leaves or stems).

Some types are more susceptible to fungus and mildew than others so check around to see what performs best in your area. Use garden sulfur in solution with vegetable oil and dish detergent as an all around organic treatment for mildew and problem insects on leaves. Typically 1 tbsp. sulfur, 1 tsp. each oil and soap with 1 quart water.

Birds can be trouble too, so you may wish to cover plants with a net as berries ripen.

Good luck!

Question About Child Labor Laws In State Of Georgia...?
Okay, So I Am 16, And I Live In Georgia. My Dad Owns A Lawn Care/Landscaping Business And I Often Work With Him. I Do Things Such As Edge The Yard, Run The Blower, Put Down Fertilizer, Spray Weed-Killer, Place Pine Straw, Etc. I Was Recently Told That Since I Do Not Have A Work Permit To Be Doing This, And Since It Is Considered An &Quot;Agricultural&Quot; Occupation, That I, Well Mainly My Dad, Could Get In Some Serious Trouble. Apparently I'M Not Supposed To Run Such Machines That Could Endanger Me Nor Am I Supposed To Handle Poison (Weed Killer). I Really Don'T Know How Accurate These Accusations Were, But I Would Really Like For All Of This To Just Be Cleared Up. Also, During The School Year Like Doing Spring Break (Which Is Right Now) My Dad And I Will Work From 8 Am Until 7-7:30 That Night Nearly Non-Stop. Please Help In Anyways Possible And Let Me Know What Is Not Okay So We Don'T Get Into Any Kind Of Trouble. Thank You In Advance.

You do not need any sort of permit to work in GA. as far as lawn mowing and the such i know plenty of kids who had their own lawn mowing businesses and never had any problems. These were not your regular, " hey miss Johnson do you need me to mow your lawn?" They actually had contracts with customers and employees and multiple pieces of machinery.

I live in GA and am 20. When i was 15 i worked at a fast-food restaurant and basically broke every law they had about child labor. Such as operating certain machines, doing certain jobs.

If my memory serves me correctly then since you are 16 the only "time" requirements you have is no more then 25 hours a week during the school year and no more then 5 hours during a school day...I know it was something silly like that but it only really matters if your dad is documenting how much and when you work. I would just suggest that he fudges the numbers a little bit and spread it out over a couple of days/weeks. Thats what i did when i was a manager at the fast-food restaurant.

My Rabbit Poops Everywhere In The House(Not In The Same Area)?
How Can I Train My Rabbits To Use The Bathroom In A Certain Area? Everywhere We Go Little Black Balls That My Dogs Are Starting To Eat. Ewwwwww.. Please Help!!

How to get your rabbits to use the bathroom in a certain area, you ask? How about a litter box. Rabbits are easily trained to use a litter box, just like a cat would.

Put a litter box in its cage. If you don't keep it in a cage, put it somewhere in the house where the rabbit usually is. As for the litter you use, do not use clay or clumping litters, or cedar or pine wood shavings. Use a litter that is rabbit friendly and odor absorbant. Some good brands are Critter Country, Eco-Straw Pellets, Gentle Touch and Cell-Sorb Plus.

Its a little long to write, so I'm going to post a site that will list the steps to litter box training.

http://exoticpets.about.com/cs/rabbits/a/rabbitslt.htm

All my rabbits have been litter box trained and they all got used to it around a week.

Best of luck to you and your rabbits!

Small Bump On Foot Filled With Clear Liquids?? Possibly A Wart?
Ok, So I'M 13. I Have A Small Bump The Bottom Of My Foot(About An Inch And A Half Below My Big Toe About On The Very Edge Of My Foot) That Is Filled With A Clear Liquid. By Small, I Mean About A Quarter The Size Of My Pinkie Nail. I Only Noticed It Because It Was Raised A Bit. I Tried Popping It Thinking It Might Be A Splinter (Because I Put Pine Straw Down While Wearing Sandals, Yes I'M An Idiot) But It Wouldnt Pop. I Consulted My Mom Who Is A Nurse And She Said It Was Probably A Planters Wart. But Shes Not In The Skin Department, But Rather Of Taking Care Of People After Surgery. And Aren'T Planters Warts Supposed To Itch?? Cause Mine Doesn'T....Please Help!!!! I'M Freaked Out By It!!!! D:

...

When was the last time you looked at the bottom of your foot?
If you didn't notice anything when you put on your sandals today the bump probably surfaced during your day out or in the pine straw.

If it's got fluid in it, you or your mom can take a needle and heat on a flame to sterilize it and then
burst the skin til the fluid comes out. Swab the area around the blister with rubbing alcohol before you burst the blister and after. If you have a splinter, use tweezers and a really bright light. If you don't think it's a blister, then leave it and get advice from your MD.

From your description I don't it's plantar warts. Check Wikipedia for more info.

My Rosemary Christmas Tree Is Browning Out. How Can I Help It?
Hi Everybody. Thanks For Being Here For Me. I Could Afford A Mini-Christmas Tree This Year. And I Love It. It'S A 2 Foot Rosemary Shrub. It Smells Better Than The Pines I Remember Vividly As A Kid. However, Mine Seems To Be Browning Out, With Its Needles Turning Black. I Water Thoroughly And Allow To Drain Thoroughly, And Set It Up In The Sunniest Window (Where Ever Other Plant Seems {Okay For Now}). I Water Daily, As The Directions Suggest. My Simple Device For Measuring Indoor Temperature Reads 80 Degrees. I Do My Very Best Not Water The Needles. Some Water Landed On The Lowest Of Boughs, But The Black Needles Extends All The Way Up. She Is Not Dead, Just Loosing Needles Faster And Faster Since I Adopted Her. Any Suggestions As To How To Help Her Thrive? One More Question, Is It Ok To Recycle Her Dead Needles Among My Other Plants? Sort Of Like An Indoor Mulch? Thanks For Your Help! (I Have More Questions On The Way, But Will Save For Another Day)

Who told you to water every day???!!! I hope you have been only watering when it is STARTING to get dry. Rosemary is actually a very hardy herb/bush. If it is dropping needles/leaves you have probably got root problems. They may have started to rot or seal themselves off in an effort to survive. Plants will sometimes go into shock when they are transplanted from one container or garden to another. When this happens the roots stop drawing in moisture and or nutrients and seal themselves off. This causes the plant to slowly die back. As the roots die so do parts of the plant. It will start with the leaves, secondary limbs and onto the primary limbs and stems until it is completely dead. The die back could also be because of abrupt changes to its enviroment, water light and temperature. if it is near a source of heat that turns off and on (furnace vent or fireplace) or near a draft (door to outside or window that is opened occasionally) this dramatic change can cause leaves to die and fall off. It sounds like you got the instructions for myrtle. This plant is also sold as a christmas tree shaped plant for the season and it does need watering almost everyday and frequent misting. It has a nice fragrance as well but not nearly as strong as rosemary. Try placing your plant in a bright place with a stable temp. water when pot feels light when you lift it. Do not let it sit in water. lightly scratch the stems and check that they are still fresh green and supple. If dry and brittle prune back to healthy stems and try use a water soluble fert. like 20-20-20. lightly water first with room temp. water and then use the fert/water solution to finish watering plant. follow mix. directions carefully don't make it too strong or you may burn the roots.

FAQ

Can You Put Two Pregnant Rabbits Together?
I May Have Two Female Bunnies That Are Pregnant, Can I Put Them In The Same Cage? Will They Fight? Is It Okay To Put The Two Together With Their Babies And Them In The Same Cage?

Hi...I've been raising and showing rabbits for 10 years. I never recommend that rabbits housed in the same cage. Definitely not pregnant does (female rabbits), they are extremely territorial and would most likely either not take care of their babies or even kill them. It is not a pretty sight to see how they kill babies sometimes. But like I said, even when not pregnant it is not a good idea to have rabbits in the same cage. They are really not social animals and do not get lonely or pine for other animals company. Even rabbits that seem to get along perfectly will fight at one time or another, and typically chew off pieces of each other's ears and pull out their fur. You giving them adequate attention is really the best option. Having them in cages where they can see each other is good, but anything beyond that is dangerous. Also, when the does are due (their gestation period is 28-32 days) they will each need a nestbox. The ones that I use can be bought at Tractor Supply and are metal with a removable wood floor (for cleaning). The boxes will need to be put in the cages with them a couple days before they are due with about a 2 inch layer of saw dust (pine, not cedar) across the bottom with a handful of straw (not hay, hay is what they eat and straw is bedding) in the box along with a couple more handfuls outside the box for her to carry in and build her nest with. All in all about half of flake for each doe. And they usually give birth at night. Hope this helps and please feel free to contact me with any other questions.

How Is Wood Mulch Made?
Is It As Simple As Just Chipping Wood Or Is There A Curing Process Involved? I Have A Lot Of Pine Brush I Was Going To Burn, But I Need Mulch. Can I Just Chip It Up And Spread It Around? Are There Any Types Of Wood Not To Use? Does It Have To Be Dead And Dry Or Can Green Wood Be Used?

Materials

* organic residues (cow manure) - grass clippings, leaves, hay, straw, shredded bark, whole bark nuggets, sawdust, shells, wood chips, shredded newspaper, cardboard, wool, etc. Many of these materials also act as a direct composting system, such as the mulched clippings of a mulching lawn mower. There are many differing opinions on what to use.
* compost - This relies on fully composted material, where potential weed seed has been eliminated, or else the mulch will actually produce weed cover.
* Rubber mulch - Made from recycled tire rubber.
* plastic mulch - Crops grow through slits or holes in thin plastic sheeting. This method is predominant in large-scale vegetable growing, with millions of acres cultivated under plastic mulch worldwide each year (disposal of plastic mulch is cited as an environmental problem).
* organic sheet mulch - Various products developed as a biodegradable alternative to plastic mulch.
* rock and gravel can also be used a mulch. In northern climates the heat retained by rocks will extend the growing season.

The way a particular organic mulch decomposes, and reacts to wetting by rain and dew, determine in great degree its effectiveness. Organic mulches can rot rapidly rather than slowly break down, require nitrogen to decompose, can mat into a barrier that blocks water and air, can wick water from the soil to the surface due to its porocity, all conditions that can be detrimental to crops and ornamental plants.

Living mulch may also be considered a type of mulch, or as a mulch-like cover crop. This technique involves undersowing a main crop with a fast-growing cover crop that will provide weed suppression and other benefits associated with mulch.

Mulching is an important part of any no-dig gardening regime, such as practiced within permaculture systems.

[edit] Application

Mulch is usually applied towards the beginning of the growing season, and may be reapplied as necessary. It serves initially to warm the soil by helping it retain heat. This allows early seeding and transplanting of certain crops, and encourages faster growth. As the season progresses, the mulch stabilizes temperature and moisture, and prevents sunlight from germinating weed seed.

Plastic mulch used in large-scale commercial production is laid down with a tractor-drawn or standalone plastic mulch layer. This is usually part of a sophisticated mechanical process, where raised beds are formed, plastic is rolled out on top, and seedlings are transplanted through it. Drip irrigation is often required, with drip tape laid under the plastic, as plastic mulch is impermeable to water.

In home gardens and smaller farming operations, organic mulch is usually spread by hand around emerged plants. For materials like straw and hay, a shredder may be used to chop up the material. Organic mulches are usually piled quite high, six inches or more, and settle over the season.

In some areas of the United States such as central Pennsylvania, northern California, more specifically mulch is often referred to as "tanbark", even by manufacturers and distributors. In these areas, the word "mulch" is used specifically to refer to very fine tanbark or peat moss.

Mulch made with wood can contain or feed termites, so care must be taken about not placing mulch too close to houses or building that can be damaged by those insects. Some mulch manufacturers recommend putting mulch several inches away from buildings.

[edit] Sour mulch

Mulch should normally smell like freshly cut wood, but sometimes will develop a toxicity that will cause it to smell like vinegar, ammonia, sulfur or silage. This happens if the material is not rotated often enough and it forms pockets where no air is circulating. When this occurs, the decomposition process become anaerobic and produces these toxic materials in small quantities. Once exposed to the air, the process quickly reverts to an aerobic decomposition, but these toxic materials will be present for a period of time. If the mulch is placed around plants before the toxicity has had a chance to dissipate, then the plants could very likely be severely damaged or killed depending on their hardiness. Plants that are predominantly low to the ground or freshly planted are the most susceptible.

If sour mulch is applied and there is plant kill, the best thing to do is just water the mulch heavily. Water will help the chemicals to dissipate more quickly and refresh the plants. By the time plant kill is noticed, most of the toxicity will have already disappeared anyway, so removing the offending mulch will have little effect. While testing after plant kill will not likely turn up anything since the toxicity will have dissipated, a simple pH check may reveal a highly acid content, perhaps in the 1.8 to 3.6 range instead of the normal 6.0 to 7.2 range. Finally, placing a bit of the offending mulch around another plant to check for plant kill will verify if the toxicity has departed. If the new plant is also killed, then sour mulch is probably not the problem.

[edit] Straw mulch

Mulch made from straw is generally lighter and easier to use than bark mulches, with the added advantages of being biodegradable and neutral in pH. Straw mulch tends to additionally have higher moisture retention and weed controlling properties than other mulches.

[edit] Living mulches

Living mulches differ from cover crops in that plants continue growing with the main crops whereas cover crops are incorporated into the soil or killed with herbicides. However, living mulches might need to be mechanically or chemically killed at some point to prevent competition with the main crop (Brandsaeter et al. 1998, Tharp and Kells, 2001).

Are The Pine &Quot;Needles&Quot; Actually The Leaves Of The Pine Tree? What'S The Deal With That.?
1) Do The Needles Of All Evergreen Trees Count As Leaves? 2) Is This A Crazy World Or What? 3) Is It Correct To Say &Quot;Pine Leaf&Quot; When Talking About Otherwise Might Be Refered To As A &Quot;Pine Needle&Quot; ?!?

1. Not all needles are leaves. There are some species with needles where the needle is actually a modified stem, with small scale leaves that appear in whorls around the stem e.g Casuarina sp.

2. Its always been a crazy world and its sure to get crazier.

3. I did a whip around of my office (I'm a plant pathologist) and all the scientists agree that while it might be technically correct to say 'pine leaf' if you do, scientists will likely think you are a bit of a tool.

I Want To Sell 3-5 Huge Pine Trees That Are In My New Back Yard. Where Should I Start?
I'M Not Sure What Kind Of Pine Trees They Are Maybe Blue Spruce..?..

Definition is everything. If the trees are healthy, full of needles and HUGE as you say, then you would want to contact "estate landscapers", building contractors or a local college that offers a horticulture program. Nursery's and garden centers are in the business of making money and probably wouldn't pay enough, and bother with the labor cost involved in digging up your yard. Make sure they don't destroy any underground electric/plumbing or gas lines. Check with your insurance agent to see who is responsible should damage occur. Good luck.

I Have A Lovely Healthy Rabbit, I Use Hay For Her Bedding But Was Wondering If Pine Straw Is Harmful To Them?

I am not sure what you mean by pine straw...do you mean pine shavings? If so, I would not recommend using that. Pine shavings are thought to cause liver damage.

Here is what the House Rabbit Society has to say about litters:

"8.4 What types of litter should I use?
It depends on what's available in your area and what your rabbit's habits are. Keep in mind the following as you choose your litter:

most rabbits spend lots of time in their litter boxes
rabbits will always nibble some of the litter
rabbit urine has a very strong odor.
House Rabbit Society recommends organic litters, made from alfalfa, oat, citrus or paper. (Some brands to look for: Care Fresh, Cat Country, Critter Country, Yesterday's News, and Papurr) For a complete listing of litter types, see the litter boxes and liver disease article.

Stay away from litters made from softwoods, like pine or cedar shavings or chips, as these products are thought to cause liver damage in rabbits who use them. CatWorks litter has been linked to zinc poisoning. Swheat Scoop Litter should be avoided, because rabbits will often ingest it. Because it is comprised of wheat, it is very high in carbohydrates and can cause obesity, excessive cecal production, diarrhea, bacterial imbalance, and other health issues.

Another approach is to place a handful of hay in each box, or to simply use hay as litter. It is helpful to put several layers of newspaper under the hay, to absorb urine so that your rabbit is not standing in the urine. Most newspapers today are using soy-based ink, which is safe for your rabbit, but check with your local newspaper to make sure first. Obviously, you need to change the hay fairly frequently (daily), since your rabbit will be eating it. This method often helps to encourage good litter habits as well as to encourage hay consumption, since rabbits often eat at or near the same time as they use the litter box.

Pros and cons of the various types of litter include:

clay litter is dusty--if your bunny is a digger, the dust can make her vulnerable to pneumonia
the deodorant crystals in some clay litters are toxic
clumping litters will clump inside the rabbit's digestive and respiratory tracts (the latter if they manage to make enough dust to breathe) causing serious problems and often leading to death
pine and cedar shavings emit gases that cause liver damage when breathed by the bunny
corn cob litter isn't absorbent and doesn't control odor, and has the the risk of being eaten and casing a lethal blockage.
oat- and alfalfa-based litters (available from Purina, Manna-Pro, and King-Soopers groceries [not sure what the geographical range of this chain is]) have excellent odor controlling qualities, but if a rabbit eats too much, they expand and cause bloating; these, too, can be added, with the bunny's waste, to compost
newspapers are absorbent, but don't control odor
citrus-based litters work well, offer no dangers, and can be composted, but may be hard to get and expensive in some areas of the country/world
some people have reported success with peat moss which can also be composted
Many people have great success with litter made from paper pulp or recycled paper products. These litters are very good at absorbing and cutting down on odors. A litter called CAREfresh is available. You can find out about local places that carry Carefresh by emailing [email protected] or by calling 1-800-242-2287. A similar litter in a pelleted form is called Cellu-Dri 1-800-382-5001. These litters are harmless if ingested.
Compressed sawdust pellets: are inexpensive, highly absorbent litters used in many foster homes. They are made from softwood or hardwood sawdust, but they are not toxic because the phenolic compounds are removed during their manufacture. Their wood composition helps control bacterial growth and odors. Wood stove fuel pellets and Feline Pine are two examples of this product.
Litters made from Aspen bark are safe and good at absorbing odors. One brand is called GentleTouch 1-800-545-9853. "
